Floors that will rule 2018!

Design trends are evolving at an ever-quickening pace and while 2017 was a fantastic year, 2018 promises to bring even more excitement and innovation in the design space, particularly when it comes to flooring trends. While some trends have stood the test of time, others have vanished in the blink of an eye only to make room for new modern looks. We all say New Year, New Look. Don’t we?? Why not give your room a look that’s trending in 2018 too? Look here’s a peek at some of the trends that will dominate the coming year!

2018 will bring us a return to some classic inspired patterns with beautiful colour combinations and designs. This year is going to be a big year in terms of revisiting old trends. The first beautiful trend is the traditional floral patterns which are going to make a grand comeback with their colours, detailing and vintage vibes. Floral patterns are making a huge come back to this year with a vast variety of colours. Art continues to spill into home spaces with different variations forming a particular design. BFT has these classic patterns in bold, vibrant colours and exaggerated patterns. These designs serve as part of the aesthetics and create a more natural feel.

Another classic trend that would complement a dark coloured wall or a patterned wall painting is to use simple tiles to create elegant floorings. We recommend on keeping your floors plain with light colours when you have a lot of décor in your space. It is the most popular design trend to keep your flooring designs simple and minimal to reveal the elegance of the space. Simple patterns accompanied by elegant colours speak for themselves about the Interiors of the given space. 2018 is all about minimalism and classic floorings for an avant-garde style home. BFT recommends going with simple designs that create a sophisticated look adding to the elegance of the space. The colour palette that creates this look comprises of pastels, browns and creams which create a warm and cosy vibe. Move away from contrasting and bright colours and combine light, medium and dark tones to create a softer effect.BFT creates customized flooring and offers various colour options from which you can choose and design the flooring for your home or any given space. The simple Cast-In-Situ and Terrazzo tiles are perfect to attain the desired look and feel.

Another classic and all-time favourite trend is the Geometric pattern!! Playing with different shapes and creating unique patterns is what BFT loves to do; from creating stars to diamonds and hexagons, we’ve done it all. This pattern will perfectly complement simple & elegant home decor to highlight any given area. The hexagon is a classic geometric tile shape that will always transcend trends, making it a staple shape in tile design. Geometric tile doesn't necessarily mean to have to choose a dramatic shape and colour scheme. Instead, you can keep it simple with a classic white or neutral colour, with a square or any pattern tile and a contrasting black grout line. Using a range of shapes from hexagons and triangles, squares and herringbone, establishments and individuals can choose to be bold and create instantly recognizable designs that will create emotional responses.

A little customization would do no harm in creating flawless beautiful flooring patterns. Being simple is good no doubt but adding some uniqueness to your flooring is always a good idea to create a statement look. Statement floors and personalised flooring are all key trends we’re seeing the great appetite for in the world of leisure and hospitality this year.

Now that you’re acquainted with the design trends for 2018, kick start the New Year with floors to die for! Get your floor game on point with BFT’s customizable options that are a blend of handcrafted heritage and contemporary floorings. It doesn’t get better than this… Truly!

All About Those Floors!

Artistic creations don’t have to be confined to your walls. When it comes to your house, there are plenty of ways to infuse beauty and design. From the décor to the furniture, each piece of your overall vision can be accented with an artsy essence. There is, however, one important element that plays a crucial role in enhancing the aesthetics of your house! Wondering what that is?

That’s right! It’s undoubtedly your flooring!! The floor design reflects the concept and quality of your life and is an extension of who you are. Adding interesting designs to your flooring not only breathes life into the space but also defines its energy. Selecting the correct design that blends in well with the interiors of your house is important to give a wholesome finish. Without the right flooring, your room can have design elements in all the right places and still not look right. The design idea for your floor must depend entirely upon your personal taste and also the room interiors.  Big surface areas such as flooring will have the greatest influence and it is worth taking great care in selecting the right materials and patterns to highlight the given space. Flooring thus plays a significant role in beautifying the look of the house and giving it character.  The cement floorings BFT provides are long lasting, of superior quality and available in a vast range of designs and colours.

Selecting flooring for your space is an important and challenging step as there are a number of flooring and designs options available in the market. At BFT, we have in-house designers to guide you with the perfect flooring solution that matches the interiors of your home and enriches the look and feel of your space.
BFT has a wide variety and range of tiles which are neither printed nor painted; coloured cement materials are hand-poured into divider moulds to create the stunning patterns that have become synonymous with the brand.

Cement is incredibly durable. Floors can last up to 60 to 70 years if used and maintained properly. In addition to this, the tiles can be re-polished a number of times during their lifetime and will look as good as new each time this process is repeated. Cement floors can withstand a lot of wear and tear and are perfect for high traffic areas.

These tiles are very easy to take care of. A few simple steps and your flooring is good to go! Avoid using harsh chemicals such as phenyl. Just use plain water and most importantly, change the water often during the mopping process. This will keep the tiles clean, and indeed will ensure your tiles gleam more and more over the years. If you like, you may buy our effective soap solution and use a small capful in each bucket of water for the desired results. A small bottle should last you a long time.

It’s very important to follow these key steps to maintain your flooring so it continues to shine on for years! Beautiful design makes beautiful spaces. Get that floor you’ve always dreamt of with the splendid designs and patterned floors from the extensive BFT range!

Reflecting Nature through Design

Nature! Where do we start with this perennial source of inspiration – be it artists, architects or designers, everyone has looked to nature for creative inspiration at some point or another. A close look at nature can unlock the imagination and inspire the deepest form of creativity! Nature paints the most beautiful pictures that can easily take your breath away. Wouldn’t you agree that nature’s wonderful creations deserve a collection of their own?! You bet they do!
That’s where Parallax Design Studio comes into the picture! The studio was established in 2005 in Mumbai. This studio approaches creative problem solving with the observation and understanding of the unique values and requirements of each client. The central concern of the practice is excellence in design through active collaborations with graphic and product designers, engineers, artists and local artisans. The firm deals with a wide range of projects and is not restricted to a particular genre. We collaborated with the tremendous artist and designer, Rohit Mankar from Parallax Design Studio, to create a beautiful nature-based series - the Aranya collection.

Design Inspiration
The idea for the Aranya collection was born when Rohit was working on a project in Alibaug where he saw black tiles which had fish moulds in them. That’s what got him to think about playing around with the various aspects of nature to come up with a beautiful nature-inspired series.

This series is inspired by traditional stone inlay floors found in Indian architecture. We took the same inspiration for our motifs as the traditional designs - nature, flora and fauna – but reinterpreted them in a modern way. Our Vice-Chairman Firdaus Variava and Rohit Mankar met and discussed this idea and took it a step further to create the Aranya collection.

The Aranya collection draws its inspiration from the patterns of nature in motion - the sculptural forms of a bird mid-flight, the gentle flutter of a butterfly’s wings, delicate overlapping petals in a Gerbera flower swaying in the breeze, and the beautiful proportions of a dragonfly. Each theme creates a sense of nature captured in motion, and when combined, the different themes come together to create a mystical woodland setting. This collection adds that perfect touch of whimsy and liveliness to your floors. You can play around with the different motifs or use plain tiles to create a wonderful pattern, be it on your floors or walls. These various patterns are available in different colours and combinations which when mixed together create absolute magic!!!

We are thankful to Rohit Mankar for this lovely collaboration and creation. It was great working together to bring the elements of nature to life through creative design! We hope you enjoy this collection that encompasses nature’s most awe-inspiring masterpieces in a way you’ve never seen before!

'Floor'ed by the tropical paradise- Goa!

A tropical paradise, Goa has long been an escape for travellers who are looking to leave the dull monotony of life behind and relax for weeks or for months at end in stunning surroundings. Pint-sized Goa is more than just beaches and trance parties. Goa's identity is defined by its beautiful natural environment together with the prevalent Indo-Portuguese and vernacular styles of architecture. A kaleidoscopic blend of Indian and Portuguese cultures, sweetened with sun, sea, sand, seafood and spirituality, there's nowhere in India quite like this vibrant state.

It was ranked the - best-placed state by the "Eleventh Finance Commission" for its infrastructure and ranked on top for the best quality of life in India by the National Commission on Population based on the 12 set indicators.

Goa’s rich architectural wealth is evident in its most iconic architectural form i.e. the Portuguese-style bungalow mansion, with its wrought-iron balconies, shady front balcãos (pillared porches), oyster-shell windows and central saquãos (inner courtyards).  Today, Goa is not just recognized as a tourist destination but is also well-known for its world Heritage architectural masterpieces.

Did we say just ‘Heritage’? Yes, we did! Bharat Floorings and Tiles have always been known to be associated with beautiful Heritage™ tiles which adorn architectural marvels across the country. Therefore, it’s no surprise that our tiles have found a place in Goa’s exotic dwellings. We have done so many luxury villas with Isprava developers and projects – from modern to vintage- keeping in mind the architectural style of Goa. Our new store in Goa is designed to provide a design experience to our customers and shoppers with a wide range of tiles and qualified sales representatives who are always available to lend you top-notch service.

Keeping in mind Goa’s culture and its iconic beaches, we have created The WAVES Tile that belongs to our splendid Made In India collection! We have brought out the identity of Goa through our tiles, what could possibly be more exciting than that?

Going back to some of the sites where our tiles can be found - we have done some mesmerizing sites across the state blending the Goan theme and architecture. These beautiful sites bring out the beauty and essence of Goa. From the BFT+ Range to the Heritage™ Collection patterns - our tiles have been installed to create a wonderful look and provide an extension of the soothing and calming Goa vibe.  From restaurants to Villas and churches, we have done it all! A few iconic sites are Villa Azul; a few Private residences; a Private villa- Branco in New Goa; Restaurants – Showbar, Café Soro and many more.

Villa Azul a super-exclusive luxury home that’s nothing less than a work of art designed by Studio MoMo. They chose patterns from the esteemed Heritage™ collection, each tile complementing the beauty of the interiors in its own way. Retro compass inspired by nature’s elements, an unusual trendy pattern appreciated by all, gives the space a contemporary look. Every tile used In Villa Azul is customized in different combinations and colours as per the style and layout of this beautiful home. From different bedrooms to the veranda area, our cement tiles add elegance and charm to the exotic villa. Villa Azul has been added to one of the most prestigious projects on our list. The old seasoned charm and the contemporary amenities make it one of the best holiday homes in Goa.

Another iconic Private Villa designed by Alice von Baum uses the customized Daisy pattern, Retro compass pattern, which have all been designed by her and our Terrazzo Grandezza tiles in grey and white colour. These designs used in different shapes and colours were specially designed for this spectacular villa in Goa.

A custom design Herringbone Pattern from our Heritage Tiles Range used in four different shades of Grey, White, Green and Blue Lagoon at a private Villa Verde in Goa. The Heritage tiles are one of the most famous and oldest collections of Bharat Floorings. The various patterns and colour scheme used at this beautiful Villa in Goa compliments the entire look and feel of the place.  The colours used while designing the space are well thought of which highlights the space, giving it an elegant look. Developers: Isprava. Interiors: Studio Momo.

Some of the classic works of designer Alice von Baum are showcased in this Private apartment incorporating the Bhangda pattern - the Fish design with Unitinta tiles in shades of white and grey used in the Bathroom. This customized pattern from the BFT+ designer collaboration range creates a unique and distinct look which adds character to the space. Another pattern installed in the bedroom is the Unitinta™ tiles in different colours and styles which make for a stunning floor. However, the colour combinations used in the rooms are closely similar to each other in the entire villa. The combinations used to design the space unite the look of the interiors and bring it together.

A famous Bar in Goa ‘Showbar’ is a modest attempt to pay tribute to the vast yet rarely acknowledged Art-Deco movement of design and architecture in Goa. Showbar is a pub & diner conceptualized within the distressed walls of a 1940’s cinema hall that once existed in Candolim, Goa. The design of the pub introduces modern elements that are inspired by the Art Deco movement – a dramatic lighting installation, contemporary furniture, cubist floor tiles and stylized geometric patterns and forms. The designers, Raya Shankhwalker Architects used the Cast in situ Terrazzo flooring in Terracotta red, Silver grey, Mint green in the Main Hall. Our Cast in situ cement flooring in the 3D cubist pattern is also used in the bathroom. These tiles bring out the theme of the restaurant.

The Soro Restaurant designed by Raya Shankhwalker Architects. “Soro” meaning alcoholic beverage in Konkani, is a tavern conceptualised within the ruins of an old corner store. The interior walls of this restaurant have been brought to life with vintage graffiti. Some bold elements of graphic design were introduced into the flooring by using our mixed customized patterns - a very popular and trendy BFT pattern installed in various places.

BFT loves to experiment with different patterns and styles which never fail to disappoint! We are glad to be a part of such lovely spaces seeking the quintessential heritage look. Each pattern at these various sites has a different story to tell which is just wonderful.  We can’t get over them, can you?

Becoming a part of history!

It was a moment of great pride for every Indian when Ahmedabad bagged the World Heritage City status from UNESCO. The 606-year-old walled city founded by emperor Ahmed Shah was declared India’s first World Heritage City on July 8, 2017. And, rightly so we say! The Indian independence movement developed its roots in this city, led by the
Father of our Nation – Mahatma Gandhi who was at the forefront of India’s non-violent freedom struggle. What additionally contributed to this rightly deserved title the city proudly holds today is the exemplary architecture of the intricately carved wooden Havelis dating back hundreds of years!!! Ahmedabad stands unique as a culmination of various architectural styles and a historical relevance that defines its outstanding universal value.

The city of Ahmedabad is endowed with a rich architectural heritage that is vital to the local identity and continuity of the place.  BFT is proud to be associated with the city having helped in the restoration of one of Ahmedabad’s prized possessions - the “Deewanji Ni Haveli”. The 250-year old Deewanji Ni Haveli is a wooden icon intrinsic to the 606 -year-old of Ahmedabad. “Deewanji Ni Haveli” literally means house of the Deewan, a minister in the court of the King, where the Deewan and his family resided during the years of the Mughal Empire.  Revitalized and embellished by the City Heritage Center, an NGO promoted by a group of entrepreneurs, the Haveli is an image of a vision shared by hundreds who wish to see the old city restored to its former glory.
The origin of this magnificent Heritage building traces back to Ahmedabad's Mughal Era. The architecture, intricate wooden carving, lime stucco and stonework epitomize the splendour of our culture and traditions. The Haveli is a resplendent- three-storey building, with a north and east entry (which is built on a height of 6 feet), crafted to elevate your stay in the heart of Ahmedabad. Its chowk,*jhula*, bedrooms, ballrooms, library, art gallery, *tanka*-all have fables to tell. With so much under one roof, and every shelf and corner having its own rustic charm, you cannot help but notice the glory right under your feet.  This restoration project features some of the most popular tiles from Bharat Floorings Heritage™ range.  Various patterns from the Heritage™ collection have been utilized to add to the splendour and grandeur of this beautiful haveli.

The Tulip design, Inverlochy pattern, French Beauty, Egyptian pattern from the Heritage™ collection all go wonderfully well with the overall look & feel of the restored Haveli.

The entrance of the Haveli is designed using the Inverlochy pattern from the Heritage™ Geometrique collection. The seamless pattern with bold colours creates a look and brings out the desired look; a look that later became an integral part of the Haveli.

The flooring used in the bedroom of this Heritage Haveli is the Tulip pattern adds to the vintage look while transporting you back to a world that once existed and thrived in this very haven that today serves as a resting spot for travellers seeking a peaceful getaway!

The Egyptian pattern from the Heirloom collection has been used to give a traditional and dated look to the space.

The French Beauty pattern from the Bloom collection laid in the adds vibrancy to a space that is otherwise dominated by a neutral palette. This carpet look adds a touch of warmth and softness to the interiors.

The classic customized pattern in geometrical shapes and floral designs from the Heritage™ collection has also been utilized in this common area. These are some of our oldest designs, and the fact that they are still used widely shows how timeless they are. How perfectly does it blend in with the rich and opulent interiors of this grand Haveli!!

It is such a privilege to be a part of a project with so much historical relevance and significance.Being involved in this restoration and upliftment project in a city that is beyond reflective of our country's rich and glorious past reminds us that we are still, as a brand staying true to the original values we set in place 90 years ago i.e. to become a part of India's history!

And it continues...The Made in India II series

India! The land of diverse cultures and beautiful natural landscapes! Our country has a rich heritage and, a vast and varied culture that makes every Indian proud to belong to this glorious nation. Each state in India is a unique repository of its own arts & crafts, food, architecture and history. The heritage and culture of each individual state when fused together form an iridescent amalgamation that is beautiful in the truest sense of the word. As a brand that’s inherently Indian, we are proud to have contributed towards the revival of our country’s rich culture through the introduction of the magnificent Made in India range.

Once again, we travel back to our roots with a collection that celebrates our country’s rich diversity, cultures, heritage and art - creating the Made in India II series in association with design studio - Idea Spice. The following are the states that we explore in this extended series - Goa, Punjab, West Bengal, Himachal Pradesh, Assam, and Arunachal Pradesh. After a lot of research that went into identifying the forte and the unique social and cultural characteristics of each state, the same was entwined into tile designs to stand for what India truly represents – UNITY IN DIVERSITY.

The first state, Goa is in western India with coastlines stretching along the Arabian Sea. Goa is also known for its iconic beaches, ranging from the most popular stretches at Baga and Palolem to those of laid-back fishing villages such as Agonda. The Wave pattern from the Made in India II collection is inspired by the waves, sand and relaxation offered by the country’s ultimate holiday destination!

The second state that we pay tribute to is Punjab - the vibrant state is filled with bountiful culture, heritage, festivals and vibrant landscapes. The Phulkari pattern from the Made in India II collection was inspired by the colourful phulkari dupatta, the most well-known embroidery work that is symbolic of the state of Punjab. This wonderful piece of clothing is created with splendid colours and complex embroidery. The word phulkari usually indicates a lightly embroidered headscarf, dupatta or shawl that is lovingly crafted by the women of Punjab. The colourful Phulkari dupatta of Punjab is famous in India and abroad. Inspired by its geometric floral designs we created our own PHULKARI TILE.

The third state, West Bengal has always been prominent in the field of art and culture, giving birth to a large number of modern movements in literature, painting, and theatre. The unique rustic and mystic charm of Bengal crafts are admired by art lovers all around the world. The Bindi pattern from the Made in India II range was inspired by the unique art style of the famous Bengali painter, Jamini Roy!

The fourth design is from Himachal Pradesh that is reminiscent of its spectacular mountains, snowy peaks, plugging river valleys and the century-old Buddhist monasteries. Monasteries in the state are a famous part of the history and culture of this region. The Made in India II range inspired by the Endless Knot represents the infinite wisdom, knowledge and compassion of the Buddha.

The fifth state that inspired our collection is Assam, which is a state in North Eastern India. In the west, Guwahati, Assam’s largest city, features silk bazaars. This silk is used in their traditional sarees known as Mekhela Chador. Mekhela chador is a traditional Assamese dress worn by women. These sarees have ornamental designs on them that are traditionally woven, never printed. Muga, Pat or Eri silks are used for making their traditional two pieces Assamese sarees known as Mekhela Chador. Inspired by these patterns, we created the “Mekhela” tile.

The sixth state that inspired our collection for the Made In India II collection is Nagaland. Through their crafts, women play an essential role in maintaining the heritage of the tribal society. Inspired by the Naga tribe’s Chang cloth used for their patterned shawls, and the harmony symbol used on the monasteries in this region we created the CHANG WEAVE.

The last state that inspired our design for the Made In India II collection is Arunachal Pradesh. The state of Arunachal Pradesh offers a variety of flora and fauna. For centuries, Arunachal has been the land of Buddhists and known for some of the largest Buddhist monasteries in India. Inspired by the Harmony symbols on the monasteries in Arunachal Pradesh we created the HARMONY tile.

Combining the forte of each characteristic of the states into designs that truly represents the culture of India, we created the Made In India II collection. Hope you all love it!

A Journey of Creativity

“Design is thinking made visible” And Idea Spice, our design team has played an integral role in showcasing and enhancing the creativity that BFT has always been known for. Since 2013, our design agency has not failed to surprise us with tons of innovative and inspiring ideas. Idea Spice combines business strategy, design thinking, and most importantly, undying passion to create effective design solutions for us.

Idea Spice team is a houseful of multidisciplinary people, a firm that specializes in building Brand identity & Strategy, Corporate communication, Marketing communication, New media design, Environment & Experience Design. Based out of Dubai & Mumbai, they work with passionate clients across the globe.

Saurav Roy heading the Mumbai Office joined Idea Spice Dubai Team as the Creative Director in 2002. He is responsible for the creative work done in the studio and in building design systems and processes. He relocated to India in 2007 as a Director. Firdaus Variava our Vice-Chairman and Sajith Ansar, founder, and CEO of Idea Spice have a long-standing personal relationship which formed the basis for a successful professional alliance as well, starting with the complete re-branding of Bharat Floorings.
After they designed our brand collaterals, they started the process of transforming & reshaping us as a premium brand. They are responsible for our complete brand makeover, and that’s how from a company we became a BRAND.

BFT + is a collaboration between BFT and young designers. Idea Spice handled and incorporated the branding for BFT+, and tried to bring out the art that BFT is synonymous with. The basic aim was to create brand awareness.
Idea Spice also built a whole new identity for the BFT+ range that builds the current identity of the brand while also promoting the spirit of collaboration that this initiative brings. The initiative was designed across communication collaterals, exhibitions, and on ground events.
When we collaborated with them, they were in the process of getting their own office renovated. They were looking to design a space where creativity and innovation could flourish. The entrance, cafeteria and workspace walls at the Idea Spice office all have BFT tiles that give a fun and inspiring look to the entire office!

The designing of every activity we engage in is done by Idea Spice. We collaborated with Idea Spice in 2013, recently, we thought of doing something fun with the team. The BFT and Idea Spice Team came together at their studio for designing the Made In India Range. Each BFT employee teamed up with one designer at Idea Spice.
Each Team had to pick up a chit of a particular state, followed by some research on the state allotted to them.
It was a 3-hour session, where everyone had to translate the inspirations to tile designs for the states allotted to them (eg: jewelry, script, clothing, culture etc).

This time, we traveled back to our roots and created a tile range inspired by our country’s diversity, heritage, cultures, and our art. Every state in India, every community in every direction of the country has its own idiosyncrasies, which is fascinating. Embodying this characteristic and keeping in mind the speciality of each state we have introduced the ‘MADE IN INDIA’ series. Whether it’s the Phulkari range from Punjab, or the majestic Jharokha from Rajasthan, the iconic Waves of Goa or the traditional Bindi from West Bengal, each state’s speciality has been entwined into the designs to stand for what India truly represents: UNITY IN DIVERSITY!

Idea Spice and BFT share a very affectionate relationship with each other. It’s an amazing experience working with the Idea Spice team; they never fail to delight us with their creativity and their hospitality. Hats off to the dedication of the team, no matter what it is they never stop providing their utmost services and we don’t think they have a word “NO” in their dictionary.

This sums up our journey with Idea Spice so far, and we can’t wait to create more magic along with their highly creative and innovative team!
