Pattern Flooring & Monsoon Gatherings: A Mood Board Story

The Gathering Edit There’s a point in the monsoon when staying in starts to feel like the better plan. The rain has cooled everything down, the evenings stretch a little longer, and somehow there are always more people around the house. Chai and pakoras in the courtyard. Someone pulling another chair to the table. Cousins sitting on the floor with a pack of cards. Grandparents talking in one corner while children turn the patterns underfoot into their own little games. The Courtyard Table There’s something particularly good about being outside just after the rain. The ground is still damp. Steel tumblers of chai make their way around. Woven chairs get pulled closer together and someone inevitably brings out another plate of snacks. The materials around these moments tend to be uncomplicated: stone, clay, timber, woven textures and surfaces that don't need to look perfectly uniform. A little variation in colour or texture only makes them feel more at home.     Patterns That Remember   Some patterns have been part of our surroundings for so long that we hardly notice them anymore. A checkerboard can take you back to games played on the floor. Geometric layouts bring to mind old cafés, school corridors and the floors of homes we grew up visiting. That is what makes pattern interesting. It doesn't always need to be new to feel relevant. Sometimes a familiar grid, a repeated motif or a slightly unexpected combination of tiles is enough to bring a room into focus. The pattern becomes part of the memory of the space. Warmth Without Occasion The result is a room that works on an ordinary Tuesday just as well as it does when the house is full. As the festive months get closer, perhaps it is worth looking at the spaces between the celebrations too. The floors beneath us see most of it: the extra chairs, the muddy feet, the long lunches, the games, the conversations that run late. Good materials don't just finish a room.
